The 36-year-old American, making his British comeback, has replaced Cliff Richard in the lead role of rock star Chris Wilder.
Cassidy, who starred in the Seventies TV series The Partridge Family, was wolf-whistled and cheered at the end of the three-hour production.
Later he said: "My British fans have been unbelievable and very supportive. I feel very lucky. A lot of artists forget when they make it that it is the fans ultimately who make you or break you. I have been fortunate in my career."

Cassidy said he had a three-month contract and a movie to make at the end of the year. "But if it goes great an I have time, I may stay on", he added.
