Seventies teen idol David Cassidy takes over from Cliff Richard in the musical Time next month.
Cliff ends his year run on April 9 before resuming his pop career and embarking on a tour of Europe.
Despite the show's critical panning, Cliff in his role as Chris Wilder - The Rock Star - has pulled in 650,000 people to the Dominion Theatre in Tottenham Court Road.
Cassidy, who celebrates his 37th birthday a day after opening in the show on April 11, will do a limited three-month run. His new co-star will be Stephanie Lawrence.
Former teenybopper idol Cassidy retired from the pop business in 1975 and staged an unsuccessful comeback two years ago.
He is an experienced actor, first making his name in the American TV series The Partridge Family and he has extensive experience of acting on Broadway.
"As an actor David Cassidy is excellent," said Time's creator Dave Clark. "I like to be a little off-the-wall in casting. I don't like to go for obvious choices."
Clark hopes Saturday Night Fever star John Travolta will eventually take over the leading role at the Dominion and open in the Broadway production planned for the end of the year.
