HARD TIMES

Hard Times was written by David Cassidy and Jay Gruska. This recording has never been released.

Part of this song was used as the theme song from the TV series “David Cassidy – Man Undercover”

A very special thank you to Jay Gruska for making this recording available to David’s fans. Also, thanks go to Weronika  Cyrynger and Tracey Wright for their role in making this available.

  1. I love this. Thank you so much for posting this. I can never get over the range and versatility of his voice. It’s so sultry here.

I’ve watched this entire series online and love it. I don’t understand why it was on for just one season. I’m so glad he was nominated for an Emmy for his Dan Shay role on Police Story. He should have won.

I just have to say whenever I visit this website or something pops up on the Facebook feed with his face, it immediately makes me feel better – instant endorphins. I literally was listening to his songs again in the car today (i.e., Tomorrow, How Can I Be Sure, Rock Me Baby and There’s No Bridge I Wouldn’t Cross…some of my favorites. As Time Goes by on the Thanksgiving special always gives me goosebumps. He seems very moved at the end – as am I!). It just makes everything better. I really don’t understand it. Well, actually I do understand it…he’s just so adorably handsome, uber-talented and somehow mesmerizing. And a bit mysterious. I so wish I could have met him and thanked him for the joy he brings to me. I love reading messages here that he posted. Very special.

I guess I need to just stop trying to understand it and enjoy it. It’s just kind of an enigma.

    • Betsy, thank you for your kind words. You can’t imagine how I was thrilled when listening to that demo yesterday for the first time..And I felt so sorry for David, that this fabulous song was ..destroyed, that only a half was chosen as a theme..So the producers not only change the title of the series but also they ..maimed (I don’t know if this is a right word, but you know what I mean) his and Jay Gruska’s song. I’m really very moved that Jay still has that demo like DC was still important for him. I’ve written on my blog how we’ve got this demo. This is the link

        • Thanks John..yes, it’s amazing to hear sth new again, even a longer version of a song we know.

      • Wow, this is fantastic!! Thank you so much, Weronika. Well done my friend.

I listened to I Never Saw You Coming on the link you posted. I have this song, I bought the Japan version, and it sounds a little bit different.

        Thank you again. Hugs.

        • Thanks Araceli xxx I think it’s fantastic that we inspire each other, we fans ,when we write about DC, so a lot of things you’ve published or your videos inspired me and I’ve learnt a lot from them. It’s amazing that all the time sth new appears, DC did so many things in his life, worked with so many artists, there are so many aspects of his career.. I’ve been writing my blog since December last year and I still haven’t written about many things..

  2. Loved listening to this song ,thankyou so much for sharing with us .Man undercover was a great series, just a shame it didn’t last long enough .great acting from David.

  3. Weronika- what a thrill for you to hear back from Jay Gruska! Love that you just decided to reach out to him and see what happens. What a great guy that he answered back. When I was watching the episodes and heard him singing that song over the opening credits, I always liked it and wished there was more. Thanks to you and Jay we got to hear it in its entirety.

I want you to know that I read your blog entries and really enjoy them. So thoughtful and I love your interesting information and stories about David. Would love to hear about Jay’s story of his collaboration with David.

I love this website. I listen to a lot of David’s radio interviews that are on here when I go on my walks. Thank you Jane for this site and for keeping his memory alive. I recently read the article about how you came to oversee and maintain this website. Wow. And thank you Weronica for your blog.

    • I’m so happy you like my blog, David is such an inspiration, I have always something to write about and it’s incredible how much I’ve learnt about music and pop culture because of him. Yes, it’s a great idea, an interview with Jay G. I’d love to ask him about the songs they co-wrote, maybe there were more and how the work on Hard Times looked like and why that shorter version was chosen, and did he meet with DC outside studio, were they friends, and about music for Ruby..Maybe Louise Poynton will talk with him for her podcast. and I can tell you that last year I wrote an email to David Hamilton and he answered me too, and I think it’s also bc they truly liked or even loved David. So many people loved him..

      • Weronika – I love all of those potential questions for Jay G! It is so nice to hear how so many loved and appreciated him – and loved working with him. It’s interesting to me to hear about other things that haven’t already been gone over many times in interviews. I really like the behind-the-scenes information. I’ve read his books and looked at many videos and articles/interviews on this website. I just watched the TV movie about him again. That’s why I find your blog entries so interesting. Thank you!

        • Thanks again..We will keep this flame burning, DC’s legacy..He lives in our hearts..

  4. Very well done weronika .you must have felt so excited when you got a reply from Jay G and to hear the longer version of this song .you are right we will keep this flame burning DCs legacy.

  5. Hello everyone, and especially Weronika and Jane,

I am so thrilled that this precious recording is now available to all due to your work and love and Jay Gruska’s generosity. (Was thinking that Jay might have a Polish or at lest Slavic ancestry!) I went to your blog Weronika to read the story of how it happened that Jay gave you the recording and immediately got goosebumps then got tears in my eyes.

Loving David always, and appreciating his special fans always too.

Warmest wishes from Lynne (was Lyn but changed the spelling) in Australia.

    • So happy to hear from you Lynne (I like it better, the spelling).
I can only describe everything as ..Love and Light chain, People connected with love for David, everybody had a share. I wouldn’t have written to Jay G. without Tracey inspiration. She publishes a lot of very valuable info on FB David Cassidy Great Britain Group. And I read everything, so .. and we later talked about the possibility of the demo. And it’s even better bc this is not a demo, but the original recording of the second, longer version. David’s voice, so warm and soulful, an incredible feeling when I’ve listened to it for the first time, like there was no time and space… Magic. Nothing would have happened without our love for DC..
Big hug and yes warmest wishes too..

  6. Brilliant Weronika, well done for getting hold of the demo from Jay Gruska, we are so lucky to have this longer version, to be honest I prefer it,.

    Doreen

    • Thanks Doreen, I’m so happy and he’s told me that it’s not a demo, it’s an original, ready (at the time) to use recording. He is a great guy, Jay..DC had amazing friends and those people miss him and want to talk about him and share with us their memories..

  7. Really great Weronika song!! Thanks to you and Jay for sharing this gorgeous song, also thanks to you Jay Gruska and David for this so beautiful song!!
