One summer Saturday evening, I found a bench on the leafy promenade of Lenin Prospekt; there I sat to read and watch the human parade of young Volgograders. Boys generally wore jackets but not neckties; girls carefully wore stockings and heels. Some listened to transistor
radios and nibbled at ice cream. As girls passed, boyish heads turned like iron filings near a magnet.
Two young men, both 20, struck up a conversation with me, to ask about the latest records of Bob Dylan, David Cassidy, Elton John—then invited me to share a bottle of wine at a riverside pavilion.
