Old school friends Stephen, Andy, Sean, Becky, Mel and Katherine meet up after many years. It's great to catch up, people don't really change that much, life goes on. but when they are invited to fall into the memory of a particular week in 1973, a week when David Cassidy was in town. reliving that moment ignites long hidden desires, fears, and the pain of fractured friendship.
Could it be forever? is a joyous, poignant trip that asks 'did we get where we wanted to go? Have we stayed on the highway? And can we still remember the lyrics?'
There is a moment in our formative years when loving your parents is not enough, and we discover our capacity for passion by yearning for the unobtainable. At that crossroads anything is possible. But with the passage of time these six friends have learned to deny their needs. How convenient it is to ignore the relationships and feelings that really matter. What if revisiting that youthful turning point could make us see what's important now?
David Cassidy provides the magical element in our story and his music underscores the action. As a young man in the early seventies he hit a pubescent population between the eyes. At that time he enjoyed a larger fan base than Elvis Presley or The Beatles. He still has a huge and active fan base in the UK - he sells out concert halls worldwide, continues to record, act, and write songs, and is frequently talked about by pundits and celebrities, many of whom have come out of the closet and confessed their teenage love for him.
In April 2010 he will be 60.
We will be taking Could it be Forever? to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this August.
New writers Lucie and Victoria were school friends in love with David Cassidy. While writing this play they watched a lot of You Tube, remembered things they thought they had forgotten, and sometimes failed to remain grown up when revisiting their teenage selves.
