It is not every day that the big story in racing is about food, but in New York the story is that renowned restaurateur Danny Meyer is bringing his Union Square Hospitality Group's Shake Shack and Blue Smoke to Saratoga. The headlines in New York's Capital District turned from news of the beleaguered to New York Racing Association to news of burgers, brisket, and beer. Meyer told the Albany Times Union "There's only three years that I have missed drinking from the springs since I was 16. My body is at this point made up a lot of Saratoga minerals." Not to say that horse racing lacks a major celebrity following, but this means that the three non-sports celebrity regulars at Saratoga are now Danny Meyer, Bobby Flay, and David Cassidy. (Saratoga used to have Mike Vale who had to get up early to make the donuts for Dunkin' Donuts, but he passed away in 2005.)
In the other major development, the Breeders' Cup will be running some events during the evening this year at Churchill Downs. On Friday, Nov. 5, the first day of the Breeders' Cup, the Ladies Classic will be run at 7:30 under the lights, and the big race, the Breeders' Cup Classic will be run on Saturday at 6:45, slightly after sunset. The Breeders' Cup president Greg Avioli says, "This is an experiment but it's an experiment that we're very confident is going to be a success. By running later on Friday, more people will have a chance to get home after work, make their bets and watch on television."
