Sultress of Swing

With temperatures well underneath the freezing mark and 12 mph winds the wind chill factor at Aqueduct Racetrack felt like 10 degrees. If that didn't indicated winter was here, the fact that racing switched to the winterized inner-track was proof enough. Trainer Gary Contessa, who stables at Aqueduct Racetrack throughout the year, seems to thrive under these conditions. The 2001 leading Aqueduct trainer, saddling his first horse over the surface this year, continued his 'hot' hand.

Eleven fillies and mares, 3 year-old and upward, contested the non-winner of 1X condition race, which was run at six furlongs.

A contentious three-horse battle between Burst of Dawn, Sunsational Julia and Little Lori Lu took the field into the far turn with Burst of Dawn emerging with a brief lead. SULTRESS OF SWING, ridden by C. C. Lopez, tracked the early pace while down along the inside rail. As the field turned for home, Lopez moved Sultress of Swing off the rail and once straightened for home raced to the front and held off all challengers while under a drive. Winning margin was one and one-half lengths over Burst of Dawn and Little Lori Lu.

Bred by Bertram N. Linder, Sultress of Swing is a four year-old dark bay filly by Dixie Brass, out of the Sky Classic mare, Ceil Cody. The dam is a half-sister to Southern Rhythm (Dixieland Band), winner of the Grade 2 Lexington Stakes and winner of the Southwest Stakes.

Sultress of Swing has now earned $115,420 in 20 career starts. Mr. Linder, as breeder, qualifies for a 20% breeder's award or $5,160, from the rich incentives provided by the New York Breeding and Racing Program.
