David Cassidy has been having a weird time lately. As one of the executive producers on VH1's "In Search of the Partridge Family," he's been watching as Keith hopefuls act out his scenes from old "Partridge Family" episodes.
"It's a bizarre idea," says Cassidy on the phone from south Florida. "They do the scenes in front of these blue screens, but the whole thing has been executed well."
On the show, viewers choose from actor/musician hopefuls to cast a new Partridge Family, a la "American Idol." The fresh faces perform a little and when it's all said and done and chosen, the network will air the new series. But for Cassidy, the series hasn't really ended.
"It never went away, but there's a lot of renewed interest in it now," he says. The veteran performer will be at Mohegan Sun's Wolf Den tonight and Saturday to play a lot of the catchy pop tunes that he made famous on the show. "I didn't tour for 10 years, so it's all fresh."
Cassidy has tried his hand at television, producing, recording and directing, but, he says, he finds performing live in unique and exciting.
"There's nothing like being in front of a crowd," he explains. "I love it more than anything. For my concerts, the setlists change daily and my stage patter isn't scripted or anything. It's just because I want it to be fun, and it is."
And concertgoers love having fun with Cassidy, he says. "I think the audience really wants to enjoy themselves. I see a lot of similarities between now and when 'The Partridge Family' started. It's because of the climate in the world. Back in early '70s we had Vietnam, and now we have Iraq. People just want to forget about it all and have a good time."
