Half Heaven, a homebred racing for television and singing star David Cassidy in partnership with Edward Lipton, registered her third stakes-placing and second consecutive runner-up effort in a NYRA stakes outside of state-bred company when she placed second in Aqueduct's Soaring Softy Stakes on turf under jockey Cornelio Velasquez. The mile and a sixteenth event was for three-year-old fillies that had not won a stakes on grass, and Half Heaven's strong-closing outside finish to within a half-length of the winner increased her earnings to $136,249 off a record of 3 - 4 - 1 in 11 starts. She also qualified her owners for an additional $2,720 owner award and qualified her co-owner and breeder, Cassidy, for an additional $2,720 breeder award ($5,440 total). Conditioned by NYTB 2004 Trainer of the Year Gary Contessa, Half Heaven is by champion Regal Classic (Vice Regent - No Class, by Nodouble), who stands at Joe and Anne McMahon's McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds in Saratoga Springs and whose syndicate connections qualified for a $952 stallion award. The chestnut filly is the second offspring and second New York-bred winner that Cassidy has bred from Sand Pirate, a seven-time winning daughter of Desert Wine out of graded winner Wayward Pirate ($150,608) and a half-sister to the dam of Grade 2-winning millionaire Continental Red ($1,336,518).
