Forget the Smothers Brothers. David Cassidy is hot.
This former teen idol takes the stage as the Chisholm Trail Expo Center's Christmas act this year. Past performers for the annual holiday show have included Pat Boone, Glen Campbell and Mel Tillis.
Steve Barnes, general manager of the Expo, said he had been working since July of 2006 to get the Smothers Brothers in concert and announced last December they were coming. Then things fell apart this summer.
"We had some contract problems," Barnes said. "That left me six months away with no Christmas show."
As he desperately searched for a replacement, he recalled seeing one of David Cassidy's Vegas shows. "He's an unbelievable entertainer. He can connect to all audiences of any age."
The singing and dancing actor who rose to fame in the 1970s, thanks to his role in "The Partridge Family," became an internationally known star by the time he was 21. His chart-topping tunes, "I Think I Love You," "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" and "I Woke Up This Morning," still resonate with fans.
Barnes is banking on Cassidy's popularity to draw in the crowds this Christmas.
"It's going to be a great show. I'm excited to have a younger performer bringing a different level of entertainment," he said.
David Cassidy performs at 7 p.m. Dec. 15 at Chisholm Trail Expo Center, 111 W. Purdue. Tickets, which go on sale Nov. 2, range from $30 to $50. Call 237-0238.
