My Health: David Cassidy, singer

I Definitely take care of myself, but I wouldn't say I'm particularly conscious of my health.

My primary concern is to take care of my voice - that is my instrument, after all. I would never want to disappoint the people who come to see my shows by being hoarse or not as good as I could be on the night.

If I have a few shows in a row, I will rest my voice for a day or so before and during the day of the show. I also drink a great deal of hot tea, which is a habit I picked up when I lived in London. I also drink massive amounts of water.

I've always loved sport, but I am more of a spectator than a participant. Unfortunately, I had to have some eye surgery that prevented me from playing softball well. My brother Patrick was always the jock of the family: he got scholarship offers for both football and basketball.

I don't take vitamins or supplements and I never go to the gym.

I get plenty of exercise on the stage every night. Anyone who has been to any of my shows will know what I mean!

I don't eat red meat, although I do eat chicken and fish. I like salad and pasta, and I snack on fruit and sometimes nuts. I don't drink alcohol but I must confess that I do like my Diet Coke - and my tea, of course.

I only worry about my health if I have a symptom that persists. I'm not a hypochondriac, though - I have no time for that. I'm not good with doctors and hospitals, but then who is?

I don't really pay attention to health stories in the press. I read horse journals and the sports pages and watch CNN for news, but that's about it.

I'm constantly under stress - my schedule is extremely difficult, my phone is constantly ringing with decisions that have to be made "urgently", and I travel more than I care to. I relax by watching my horses train in the morning and race in the afternoon (I love being on the horse farm where they train), seeing my son on stage in a play or on the baseball field in a game, and by sleeping - preferably in my own bed.

Once I fall asleep, I'm a very sound sleeper. I'm not sure I have a prescription for a good night's sleep, though. Most of the time I simply pass out.

David Cassidy is appearing at the Clyde Auditorium, Glasgow, on Friday.
