The 2009 Summer Festival of Lights concert series will open June 20 with a huge blast from the past.
Former teen pop idol and Patridge Family star David Cassidy will kick-off the 23rd festival season, 8 p.m., at Del Crary Park, followed just a few days later (June 24) by legendary Canadian singer/songwriter Buffy Ste. Marie.
Other concerts confirmed Thursday by festival general manager Kathy Kirkland include 54-40 (July 18) and Millbrook native Serena Ryder.
As always, each concert is a free presentation but Kirkland notes "challenging economic times" have proven a formidable obstacle. She credits the ongoing support of local businesses, private donors and three levels of government with keeping the festival intact.
Meanwhile, on March 20, a festival fundraising concert will be held at Trentwinds, featuring Jim Witter in his tribute to the piano men, Elton John and Billy Joel. Tickets cost $20 at City Hall, the festival office and CHEX Television, or $25 at the door.
