Hurry, hurry, hurry!

It's not too late to make plans to attend the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA's seventh-annual Summer Paw Picnic on Aug. 14. Our gracious hosts, Dr. Jerry and Darlene Bilinski, have again opened the gates of their magnificent Waldorf Thoroughbred Farm in North Chatham for this very important fundraiser. The news is "big" this year: Legendary actor and entertainer David Cassidy and his band will be performing in concert at the end of the day. We are bursting with excitement and anticipation. This is huge!

Let's review the picnic schedule. Doors open at 11 a.m., with hors d'ouevres being served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A gourmet barbecue, prepared by Good Food Catering, will be serving lunch from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Barn tours of the thoroughbred mares and foals will be offered at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Bill Robinson is back with his highly acclaimed and educational wildlife presentation. His animals will be center stage for an hour at 2 p.m. Seth Fallon will be master of the live auction tent at 1 p.m. and strawberry shortcake will be served for dessert at 3 p.m. Children's activities will be ongoing throughout the afternoon.

David Cassidy is scheduled to perform from 4 to 5 p.m. to cap off what will be such an important day for the homeless animals in our care. David shares with us his celebrity status, his talent and his commitment to help us with our mission. We are so grateful.

In addition to a lovely, entertaining and enjoyable afternoon, all attendees can delight in the fact that their generosity will provide a financial boost to the shelter. Know that you have contributed to an animal welfare organization that provides life-saving services for more than 1,000 animals each year. Know that our charter as an SPCA has been acknowledged as one of the most highly regarded animal cruelty units in New York state. Know that our low-cost cat and kitten spay/neuter program has performed more than 10,000 surgeries since its inception. Know that we have been at zero euthanasia for placeable animals. Know that, for almost four years, CGHS/SPCA has cemented its commitment to cat and kitten placements with a "Furrever Free" adoption policy. Know that we provide emergency services to animals in peril. Know that we sponsor a food bank to the public for all those who are in need. Know that we provide experienced, pragmatic behavior counseling and training for all animals in need, whether they have been surrendered to us or not.

Know that we administer humane education and dog safety programs to any requesting group or organization. Know that if your dog is lost and brought to our municipal holding facility, he or she will be safely handled and well cared for until we reunite you. Know that we provide aggressive medical treatment and surgical intervention when necessary for all the homeless who depend on us. Know that our hands-on volunteer base enhances the quality of life for our cherished residents. Need we say more? We'd love to have you share the afternoon with us. Help us help our animals!

Feel free to call us with any questions at 518-828-6044 or visit our website at www.cghs.org. Stop down and see us at 125 Humane Society Road, off Route 66 (about a mile south of the intersection with Route 9H) in Hudson. Our hours are 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, with extended hours of 11:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Thursday.

The food bank is open to anyone from the public in need of pet food every Wednesday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Food bank donations can be made anytime during business hours. All of the shelter's cats and kittens are "Furrever Free," with all expenses paid.

Spay/neuter clinics for cats are $65, male or female, including a rabies vaccination and a 5-in-1 feline distemper combination vaccination. Nail clipping services are available every Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the shelter, no appointment necessary, for a donation of $10 for cats and $20 for dogs.
