There's an event coming up next weekend that promises to make you feel good, partly because it will be an entertaining day and partly because it is being held for a worthy cause.
The Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA's Summer Paw Picnic takes place on Aug. 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Waldorf Thoroughbred Farm in North Chatham. A major fundraiser for the Humane Society, the day will include wildlife demonstrations, tours of the thoroughbred barns, activities for children and a live arts and antiques auction. And we haven't even mentioned the picnic yet.
Good Food Catering will serve a lavish picnic lunch, and all that delicious food can be washed down with wine, as well as beer supplied by the Chatham Brewery.
To cap off the day, a rare bird, the partridge — that is, Keith Partridge — will appear live. Seventies pop star David Cassidy, one of the stars of "The Partridge Family," will perform in concert at 4 p.m.
Proceeds from the picnic support all of the Humane Society's programs - memberships, volunteers, humane education, dog obedience training, the Pets Eternal Society or PEtS, Fund a Feline and Marvin's Fund.
Representatives from the shelter are available for lectures or visits at schools, daycare center and adult facilities. Formal private and group training classes for dogs and cats are available, as are advanced degree and certification programs.
The Waldorf Farm is located at 89 Waldorf Road, off Route 203 in North Chatham. Tickets are $70 in advance and $80 at the door. Children are 12 are $10. For advanced sales, call (518) 828-6044, ext. 101.
The Columbia-Greene Humane Society treats, trains and shelters more than 1,000 abused, abandoned and neglected animals a year. So, get to the Summer Paws Picnic and enjoy the food, activities and great pop music. In the end, please generously support the society.
