David Cassidy waits 40 years to sue for millions in lost royalties

The contract was drawn up in 1971—so why has David Cassidy waited 40 years to sue for millions of dollars in royalties? It is a question that Cassidy’s defense is mostly ignoring as it, and Cassidy, launch a major PR campaign to promote their case. The suit involves Screen Gems, CRT Holdings, Sony Pictures Television and Sony Pictures Entertainment, and was filed in a Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday. Cassidy claims that he was cheated out of millions in royalties connected to some $500 million in “Partridge Family” merchandise sales.
“For nearly 40 years, Defendants have swindled Mr. Cassidy out of his rightful share of proceeds from ‘The Partridge Family.’ And, when Mr. Cassidy has inquired into the matter, have lied to him so as to continue to conceal their deception and continue to avoid their obligation to pay Mr. Cassidy his fair share of those moneys owed him pursuant to the 1971 Contract,” language from the suit reads. Specifically, Cassidy says he was entitled to 15% of proceeds from merchandise and 7.5% of proceeds from the airing of the show.
Though the Sony camp is accused by Cassidy of dragging its feet in addressing the matter, it staunchly disagrees. Said a rep, “We have dealt with Mr. Cassidy in a completely lawful and appropriate way, and are confident that we will prevail in any proceeding.”
