So this past Saturday night I get into LAX late and I'm sitting on the bus headed to pick up a rental car when this guy asks me "so what kind of guitar do you play?" And I say "Hawaiian slack key" and he starts reminiscing about the land he used to own in upcountry Maui in the 60s. We continue our chat all the way to the counter and then I say, "you're a musician too, aren't you?" And he says "yes..., David Cassidy". I start digging in my bag to find a CD to give him, but I can't find one, so I say "I wish I had a gift for you" and he says "how about your hat? (My EVICT MONSANTO hat) He pulls out a wad of cash and says "I'll give you $1000 for that hat" and I say "No thanks. You can have it for free.. on one condition: we take a photo together with you wearing the hat". So here it is: David Cassidy wearing his new KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS: EVICT MONSANTO hat, and me :) Such a beautiful soul. We talked about life, death, love, and our values. I saw myself in him and I feel he saw himself in me, hence his gesture of extreme generosity. I'll always remember our chat.
I love how random my meetings with these legends are... Na Kupuna are always with us, even in those places we least expect. Aloha e David
