Concert Reviews
Mohegan, Sunday Night
November 5, 2006
Mohegan Sun Wolf Den, Uncasville, CT
Our group had an even closer spot in the line for Sunday's show. Amy couldn't stay, so Nadine joined us, and we took shifts holding our place in line. Joyce and I came over in the morning and relieved Felicia. The show was an hour earlier this night, so not as long to wait. We would be let inside at 5:30 p.m. We spent the day chatting with everybody in line, and it didn't seem all that long. Annette and her husband arrived, after having missed the Saturday show due to a medical emergency. Annette got in line behind us and then her friend Lisa came a bit later. I'm so glad you made it Annette!! As people came to relieve others from the queue, we'd get to chat with new people, so it was actually pretty fun. Around 3:00 Joyce and I headed back to our hotel rooms to get dressed for the show.
Then the unthinkable happened. Joyce called my room with a distressed sound in her voice. The lei, in the refrigerator, had frozen! She sounded devastated. I said how bad is it? She said it's bad. She decided to wrap it in a towel and bring it anyway. When she got down to my room, she unwrapped it from the towel. Oh the poor thing, it was pretty much ruined. Those delicate white flowers looked like wet cotton balls. I did not know what to say, and Joyce was visibly upset. I said "well the roses still look OK" but the white flowers were pretty bad. There was still about 3 hours until the show, maybe it will perk up. We headed back to Mohegan. As we waited, Joyce wondered what to do. We all decided maybe it would be good if she just wrote a little note to David that said SORRY THE LEI FROZE! and still give it to him. So that's what she did. As David sang Cherish, Joyce brought the wilted, sad lei up and held it up with her note. David went to her, took the note, read it, put on the lei anyway, and continued to sing. I was so happy for her that he still put it on, even though it didn't look all that great. A flower fell off onto the stage. David picked it up, looked at it, and said "wow it really DID freeze." Then he went back over to where Joyce was standing, bent down to her, took her hand, and said THANK YOU. It was so sincere and lovely. He then went back to his stool, took off the lei, kissed it, and put it down gently. I felt like crying. He totally made a sad situation all better.
OK, so other stuff that happened during the show (which was completely awesome):
David had mentioned at the beginning of the show that he had a surprise for us later. When he took his stool to start the acoustic set, he used his electric guitar, even though the acoustic was sitting right there behind him. After a few songs we found out why. It was because David's surprise was that he was bringing Gunner Nelson onstage to sing with him, and Gunner used the acoustic guitar. (Nelson played Friday Night in Wolf Den.) OK, I've never followed Nelson or known much about them. I remember years ago they were twins with long blonde hair, but I don't think I've ever even heard them sing. Well when this guy Gunner came out, I think my heart skipped a beat. That guy is gorgeous! He pulled up a stool next to David and I just kept looking from one to the other..wow..I don't know which one was finer! They both looked so great. David talked about how his father and Gunner's father had known one another, and then looked toward heaven and said "this is for our fathers" and they sang an old Ricky Nelson song "Travelling Man." It was wonderful. Gunner and David sounded fantastic together. I just couldn't stop looking at Gunter, so beautiful LOL, natural blonde hair, perfect teeth, ooh he is just really handsome!!! But then I would look at David, and think, my God, he's 56 years old and still looks just as fabulous as ever. Talk about eye candy, sigh...
When the song was over, Terri came to remove the words from David's microphone (which were taped to it). David said "keep that, I may want to add that song to my show." I thought OH THAT WOULD BE GREAT!!!! So maybe.just maybe..???
One of the nights, can't remember if it was Saturday or Sunday, someone had the PF Christmas Card album, and it still had the cellophane wrap over it, and the card still in the front. David took it and said something about wanting to release another Christmas album!!!! Then he went to sign the album, and he tried to take the card out of the front. He almost tore the wrap, then said "oh I better not take this out" and just signed over the wrapper. But how exciting, he's actually THINKING about another Christmas album!!!! Love it!!!!
I had once again brought my concert program from 1972 in the hopes of getting David to sign it. That poor program is getting all yucky-looking from lugging it all over the country LOL. Well I held it up and David said "Oh wait, I haven't seen this for a long time" and he took it and stood at the microphone and thumbed through all the pages! Then he made some joke about the model on the cover that he had hired, and then handed it back to me. Crap, still no autograph! But he did hold it! I shall keep trying.
David sat down on a monitor very close to the edge of the stage, in front of Janie and Gail, and talked about Rat Pack, and how it would be playing Wed. through Saturday. It was kind of like a personal invitation, because I'm sure he knew that the majority of the girls standing there would surely be at the shows later in the week. He promised them all a great time and I don't doubt it will be fun. Hopefully we'll hear all about it.
As I stood there gazing at David, I looked to the other side at all the girls lining the stage. I have to say it was a lovely sight. Every girl, eyes glued to him, all prettied up, smiling, in heaven, thoroughly enjoying every second. Mouths are all singing the same words. Even the men look like they're having fun. As David moves from side to side of the stage, the hands of every woman fly into the air in hopes of him touching them. Is there anything in the world better than a DC concert????
I think not!
Monday, Joyce and I headed for the airport. Chatting there, we both agreed that although we always hate the queue, and have repeatedly said we wouldn't come back to Mohegan, that we most likely would be back! Will it be in March David????
The end
