Concert Review
Chisholm Trail Expo Center
December 15, 2007
Chisholm Trail Expo Center, 111 W. Purdue. Enid, Oklahoma
I arrived in Oklahoma City on Saturday morning to light snow. I was pretty relieved when I saw the roads, after everybody freaking me out about the weather and driving conditions beforehand. Joyce had arrived the night before and was at a hotel near the airport, so I first went and picked her up and then we headed for Enid. The snow ended around noon so it was a pleasant drive and not much snow on the roads. Our Mapquest got us a little lost and we probably spent about 45 minutes figuring out the instructions were wrong. We got back on track after cussing out Mapquest LOL. The last 30 miles into Enid were a bit slow-going, as the road was somewhat snow packed and looked like it hadn't had much traffic.
I had some business-related things to take care of, so we checked into our room and I left for the mall (the company I work for owns it so I needed to make a visit). I was surprised at the size of Enid. I had assumed it would be small and it actually was a nice sized town (50,000).
We arrived at the Chisholm Trail Expo Center just before 7 p.m. The showroom looked lovely. All the tables were festive with decorations and bottles of wine. They had a piece of cheesecake at each seat, and a cup of snack mix. The most awesome part - they had wine glasses with David's picture and name engraved on each one! We each got an excellent souvenir. The stage was lined with poinsettia plants. Our seats were awesome and I knew we were in for a great night.
I know several people in Enid, due to my business connection here, so I was hoping for a little miracle, and sure enough, I got one! Radio station KOFM was there, and I was allowed to go backstage with some of the radio station personnel and MEET DAVID!! I was shaking like a leaf the entire time LOL, and of course I couldn't think of anything clever or unique to say, so I just said my standard "I LOVE YOU SO MUCH DAVID!" as I walked to him to get my picture taken. He was so sweet, he squeezed me close to him and said "thank you so much!" and when the photographer took the pic, David said "oh wait, take another" and then, after the 2nd one, David pulled me closer and said "one more!" So I will get those pics from the radio station and show you as soon as I can. He was wearing Sylvia's lyrics shirt with a black tshirt underneath.
After my pictures with David, the other people got pictures, and I just stood back and gazed at him as long as I could. Before you know it, it was over and David was waving goodbye. My first time EVER going backstage!
As this was happening backstage, the show had started out front, with children singing and dancing and some local stuff. There was a guy telling jokes that was OH SO BAD and boring LOL, but we somehow made it through all that, and David finally came on.
Because of the performances beforehand, David ended up without a set list, so he was lost all night as to which song was next. David said that he really wanted to thank his band for getting there, and said that poor Sully had taken 72 hours to get there (??). Therefore he wanted to give Sully the spotlight, so they played Crossroads and Matt really got into it. He is such an awesome guitarist, and David kept saying "wish he could teach ME to do that!"
A woman ran up to the stage, swinging a red bra. She held it out for David and he took it, looked at her, and then said "double D's?" He tried to throw it back to her and she said "No keep it!" David said "keep it? Noooo!" and tried to hand it to her again. She asked him to wipe his sweat on it. He said "What? You want me to wipe my sweat on it?" and he rolled his eyes, but he did it, and then he kissed the bra and handed it to her.
There were a couple drunk girls standing right in front of David at the stage, and they were chatting on their phones and to each other while David was trying to talk. He finally asked them to be quiet and not talk on their phones while he's trying to perform. He said it was very disruptive to him and he couldn't concentrate. They did not stop, in fact, one of them yelled out "take off your pants!"
David seemed irritated over that, and said "OK, let's stop all the Double D and Take Off Your Pants stuff right now, OK? Enough of that." A few songs later he had to ask those same girls to stop chatting while he was performing.
As David was making his way from side to side of the stage, shaking hands, he came to our side. A girl was waving her hand in front of him, but he reached around her and took Joyce's hand. Then he took mine, but he pulled it up high and held it for about 10 seconds as he sang! I was totally in heaven!
David told the band to "get out of here" and he pulled up the stool for the acoustic set. He loudly dropped the stool on the floor. Drunk girls laughed. David looked exasperated. (These drunk girls were the only trouble makers. The rest of the audience was behaving.)
During "Hide Your Love Away" the audience was great doing the "HEY" parts and David said "Wow you guys are great, I even forgot to say TWO THREE FOUR!" Almost at the end of the song, David stopped playing the guitar, said it was too out of tune, and finished the song with no music.
There was a stranger on stage playing the bongos. David mentioned him a couple times. The first time he said that he was an incredible percussionist, and that he was also sleeping with his drummer. Then during the band introductions, he announced him as the newest member of the band, and also the person who would be marrying his drummer! I'm sorry but I can't remember his name. Anyway there's another guy in the band, and Terri is getting married.
David told the audience that his Remix CD would be re-released in January sometime, with a different name, and he didn't even know what the name would be. I think he said that it was originally put out exclusively by Target and now it would be out everywhere.
There was an intermission halfway through the show. When the intermission was over, the announcer came out and said he had "good news and bad news." The good news was that David was coming back out now. The bad news was that everyone had to STAY IN THEIR SEATS. They made everyone at the stage sit down, and if someone tried to come up, David himself told them "you need to go back to your seat."
Joyce looked at me in dismay when he said that, because she hadn't given him her lei yet. I said "When he sings Cherish, just GO!" So as the song started, she got out the lei, and at the appropriate part, she made a dash for the stage. When David saw her he bent down to get the lei, and then kissed her hand. She came right back to her seat. He continued the song, but when it was over, he said "I just got laid again" and then "Thank you to the beautiful girl" who brings me these leis. Joyce waved to him with a huge smile.
When ITILY started, there was about 2 seconds hesitation, and then we all ran back to the stage. Some songs just aren't the same at your seat!!!
David had mentioned several times during the show that he would play some Christmas songs later. So we knew he would be back out after ITILY. We all stayed at the stage and then he came back out and sang two songs that were just wonderful: My Christmas Card to You and Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire. (That's not the correct title but you know what I mean.) I completely felt like crying as he sang those 2 songs, they were really beautiful.
It was a great show and incredibly wonderful for me!
