Concert Review
Riverside Casino, Riverside, IA
May 22, 2010
Thursday morning I got up to messages from my friends that David would be in Iowa on Saturday. I thought to myself, hun? How can this be? Well it turns out Rick Springfield was to play and came up ill for whatever reason. David decided to fill in. Which was awesome....seeing David twice in 2 months was great!
So I called the venue about getting tickets. The venue said anyone with a Rick Springfield ticket gets to go in first and we David fans could buy tickets after all of them were seated. So I knew I had to get there in line on Saturday early, to get a ticket. I asked Jane B if she wanted to go along and she did. We just met and hung out together for the first time, on Friday. Since it was only a short distance from Jane, I picked her up and we went to the show together. It was close to a 2 hour drive for me. Closest I have ever seen David to me. I picked Jane up on Saturday and we headed for the casino.
When we got there we had to find where to go . A security guard told us where to wait. A few ladies were in line when we arrived. We were told to wait along the wall to get tickets, while everyone else with Rick Springfield tickets got in and seated. It was after 7:30 and we got to go in and get our tickets. Then we had to wait in another line, while all the others got seated. At 8:00 PM, they let us DC ticket holders in. Some people cut in front of us so I complained to a woman who worked there and was organizing all this. She knew Jane and I were 4th and 5th in line, so she said she would take care of us. She took us to the front row on the right of the stage. It was a bit far over, but it ending up not mattering as we were at the stage all night. Security did not make anyone move. It was great. Anyway, we got our seats and had awhile to wait.
Finally 8:30 arrived and David came out. He wore the usual black pants and white shirt but the shoes and watch were different. He opened with Heartbeat. Was in a fantastic mood and put on all the moves. The crowd was really into it, in fact there were a lot of young people at this show. From what I could tell it was a sellout. I was surprised. He sang the same lineup as his last show, (April 23rd at Isle Casino in Iowa, which I also attended), but added C'mon Get Happy. It was great seeing him again. He had his microphone fall during a song and a guitar that did not work, but all was fixed ASAP. He did not talk a lot other than thanking Cedar Rapids Iowa for his start on his 40 year journey. Said he would come back next year, YES!!!!!
Most people we talked to had never seen David, so this was a real treat for them. Jane and I were the only regulars there. When the song Echo Valley came on he asked for a cell phone. He said it quickly and since no one heard it or was familiar with David's shows, I promptly went up to the stage and he took my cell phone from me. I took a real close-up, and while I did, he was dialing my house! My daughter Lauren answered and all she got was noise so she handed it to my husband. He knew what was going on since he had been to some of David's shows. It was great being all alone at the stage with David! Needless to say, my family couldn't believe he called or that I got him to do it. He handed me back my phone, and I took my seat. When Summer Days came on people went to the stage. It was great being at the stage all night, seeing David up close and all. Everyone pretty much stayed at the stage that wanted too, so of course Jane and I did. We were not supposed to video tape but I got some pieces here and there. He touched my hand during the concert a couple times.
Some brought in some albums so when he sang CHERISH he brought that album up on stage and held it up and talked about it. He again dedicated ITILY to the crowd and sang it to us all. Then he left the stage. Everyone up front pounded the stage and called out for his return, but no encore. All in all, it was a fantastic show and the crowd all really seemed to enjoy the show. I was also very glad to go with someone else who shares the love for David. Thanks Jane for being my buddy! Looking forward to seeing David in February, unless something comes up sooner. Thanks David for a night to remember!
