Concert Review & Pictures
The Bears Den, Seneca Niagara Casino, Niagara Falls, NY
June 21, 2013
Our David Cassidy year started off with two snowstorm related cancelled concerts in Tarrytown, NY and Atlantic City, NJ so needless to say Janet and I were looking forward to the June 21st Seneca Casino concert on the USA side of Niagara Falls. The 450 seat sold out venue was intimate with rising rows of seats and tremendous sound, just ideal for a live musical experience.
We were seated next to a young lady seeing David for the first time and my left ear had the pleasure of her screaming and clapping from beginning to end. It was nice to see that enthusiasm that I'm sure many of us have felt over the years at these concerts.
David walked on stage looking cool with dark sunglasses, blue (yes blue) shirt and dark trousers. After a funky version of C'mon Get Happy he mentioned that the sunglasses were being worn because of a recent black eye and 8 stitch bruise along the eyebrow. As you can see from the photos however, David was looking as good as ever.
Surprises included an impromptu version of 'Gloria' (one verse and chorus) as well as a complete version of 'Wild Nights' with some great rock and roll piano by Craig J. A tribute to Davy Jones followed with excellent versions of 'I'm A Believer' and 'Daydream Believer' before David graced us with a beautiful acoustic rendition of 'I'll Meet You Halfway'. An injured ring finger on his left hand made it more difficult for David to play the guitar this evening but he nevertheless marched on through the pain. A fan in the front even asked for the band aid around the finger which prompted a 'you are one sick puppy' comment from David that had the rest of the audience laughing uncontrollably.
Another 'WOW' part of the concert took place when David started singing an old blues song entitled 'Feeling All Right' punctuated by pumping fists and wiggling hips that brought cheers from the happy crowd. He sang about four minutes of the song before the band intros and then restarted the tune after Frank and Craig's solos much to our delight.
David introduced Craig's daughter, Zowie, to us and then thanked a fan for giving him a playbill to his first stage acting role, 'The Fig Leaves', back around 1968. A one and a half minute acapella singing intro to 'I Think I Love You' capped a wonderful night of song and stories which proved that David could still rock us.
Perhaps the only downside was the tight security that stopped people from taking photos and video clips. A show of this calibre deserved to be preserved on youtube or similar sites for all fans around the world to enjoy.
Overall however, a summer concert, a healthy David and new songs made for an unforgettable experience.
