May 28, 2006. Mayan King wins at Belmont Park. Trainer Gary Contessa believes he's got an eventual Grade 1 winner in his stable, and MAYAN KING (Stephen Got Even) appears capable of fulfilling that prophecy. After winning his first two career starts over Aqueduct's inner track last year, the chestnut colt suffered an injury in the Lane's End S. (G2) and didn't reappear until this April at Aqueduct. His first two efforts (a win and a second) were solid, but Mayan King put it all together with a brilliant performance at Belmont Park on Sunday, winning a tough 1 1/16-mile allowance/optional claiming event by daylight under a hand ride. He earned a 109 BRIS Speed and 111 Late Pace rating, and Mayan King is still lightly raced with room for improvement.
