Fan's Tales
David Marveleous At Molly's & La Mirada
By Cat Ortiz-White
Cat & DC at Molly Malone's
Because I'm insane - I got up at 2:00 a.m. to leave by 3:00 a.m. and arrive by 5:00 a.m. at Molly Malone's for the special Breakfast with David Cassidy hosted by L.A.'s oldies station KEARTH 101. It was very small and intimate. Not too many people were there and that made it nice. I recognized a few fans and some came up to say "Hi" to me. There were a few that were from the UK that I recognized from the "DC Then & Now" web site.
David arrived around 8:00 a.m. at Molly M's. I could be mistaken. He was in an excellent mood. He signed everything for anyone who wanted an autograph. I took my PF photo that already had Shirley, Danny, Brian & Suzanne's autographs on them. So he signed that. Then I'd bought an autographed PF Tambourine from Suzanne Crough (who played the little girl Tracy on the PF) for DC to also sign - for my daughter Crystalinda. Her two favorites are "the little girl and David Cassidy." So that was very appropriate. I told David I'd be bringing my daughter to see him for her very first rock concert.
If fans asked, they could get a photo with him. At last I asked after I saw he'd gotten up and took some photos with someone. I asked an "official looking" person who I think was from the radio station. David told them "Yeah, sure." I wore a cute St. Patty's Hat and got lots of compliments from people about it. I got two photos with DC - one with the hat on and one with out it on. I said, "Thank you so much" and gave him a kiss on the cheek. David said, "Oh you're welcome sweetie. Thank you so much for coming out." I went away a VERY happy camper! I saw at least one other fan ask and he posed for her too. So if you just asked an official person nicely, David went along with it.
I posed with one of the DJ for a photo in my St. Patty's hat and it's on their web site at http://kearth101.com/pages/305823.php At one point, I asked David if he wanted to wear the hat and he said, "No thanks." I shrugged and said, "I just thought it'd be cute for a picture." He said, "Ah, well it looks a LOT better on YOU than it would on ME!" The WAY he said it was very funny! I laughed and he kinda chuckled.
I went back home and the following day; I drove up with my friend Helen, her daughter Ariana who's 10 yrs. old, and Crystalinda. Traffic was horrific! We left at 11:00 a.m. and went to the at the Irvine mall around 2:00 p.m. We had a nice lunch at "The Cheesecake factory and let the girls go on the Carousel before going to the hotel. I was so happy I went with Helen & her daughter as girls had a blast together in the car. We met up with 4 more of my friends for dinner at The Elephant Bar and then went to the concert.
David came out rockin' with the famous "Hush" that was a hit in the 60's by the band "Deep Purple." I was also pleasantly surprised when he'd added "Crossroads" that's been done by Eric Clapton & Hendrix. He just ROCKED THE HOUSE with that number!! Plus the usual PF & early DC hits. He also did "Common Thief" from the RCA LP, "The Higher They Climb," and acoustic tribute to John Lennon & The Beatles.
Near the beginning of the concert, Crystalinda asked when David was going to come out and I said, "That's him honey. He's older now." She said, "Where are the kids?" I said, "They're all grown up now. They even have kids of their own." She said, "NO WAY!" That made me laugh and I said, "Yes, I told you that before." I'd tried explaining it to her before. But for some reason, to my surprise, she was still expecting the PF to come out - or at least a younger looking David with shag hair. I explained about all of us being older now - EVEN David Cassidy! Finally, she really "got it."
During the 1st act, fans got out of their seats to go up to the stage as usual. Security was holding us back and I said, "I've gone to his concerts for years and he likes the fans to go up so he can reach out and touch us. He ALWAYS does that!" She said, "These instructions are from David himself." I gave her a "look" and not much later she said, "Let them go." She let us go and I took Crystalinda to the front.A really sweet fan said, "Go on - get her up there. David loves kids!" I thanked her and held her up. David saw her and came over and said, "Oh look at THAT!" She was in a beautiful brown & gold dress - and green necklace & green hair piece for St. Patty's day. Everyone went "Ahhhhh." Crystalinda made two "letters" for David - with crayons. One said, "David, you rock!" and the other said "David, Please sing Brown Eyes." David said to her, "Oh look at you! Did you make these for me?" She said, "Yes." He thanked her and asked what her name was. She said, "Crystalinda." David said, "What?" I yelled "Crystalinda" and he came over me and I yelled it really loudly again. He said, "Okay, I still don't know what you said - but that's alright." He went back to Crystalinda and he saw me take out my camera and he said to me, "Okay mom, go ahead and get your picture." I took 2 really quickly. David sent her to me and I sent her back, to have her ask him to sing "Brown Eyes." However, DC then said, "Take her" and so I said, "Come here honey" and took her down right away. I didn't want to push my luck, etc.
Crystalinda was sulking later and I asked her what was wrong and she said, "David didn't read my letters." I said, "Oh, he loved them. That's why he posed with you. It's hard for him to read on stage in that light. I'm sure he read them back stage." (Not to mention, it's kinda difficult to read her 5 yr. old writing.) She seemed to be okay a bit later. Esp. when he did "I Woke Up ..." as she loooooves that song!
I only took 2 pics of them on stage together as security was so tight, I was afraid I'd be escorted out otherwise. Before the show, someone took a flash pic. and security came over and asked, "Who took that?" We all acted like we didn't know. She said, "Who ever took it, you do it again and you'll be escorted out." They reminded me of strict Catholic Nuns who'd slap your hand with a ruler if you got outta hand!
They announced before the 2nd act for everyone to stay in their seats. David came out and after his song, asked what people thought of the announcement. I don't think most understood what he was talking about so he got a mixture of clapping and boo's.
Joyce M. brought her lovely lei as usual and held it up during "Cherish" - when he likes her to give it to him and others to come up. David kept pointing and reaching out to her but she couldn't get past security and David gave security "a look" but they still didn't let anyone go up. That was just NUTS! It was the perfect type of stage for the type of "fan interaction" that David always loves. He also kept motioning for fans to get up during "Rock Me Baby," but everyone was too afraid - again because of the post-menopausal Nazis!
During the 2nd act, David talked about his hair during the concert and how he was once even considered "somewhat of a hair god" but now he's losing it and because it's thin, it's hard to decide what to do with it. He even asked the audience if we thought he should just shave it bald. The audience let him know we liked it the way he had it. DC was very humorous and it aside from the "over strict" security - it was a really wonderful concert!
Finally when DC did "I Think I Love You," the fans rushed to the stage past security and an elated DC reached out to touch as many fans as he could and took any presents handed to him. After he left the fans shouted an encore and he came back to sing "Cry." Before hand, he mentioned how he was visiting with his family while in Los Angeles. He specifically mentioned his mom, Evelyn Ward, who is dying and may only have a few days left. He told us all to try to work out any "conflicts" in your family if you can while they're still alive. He dedicated the song to his mom and he became very emotional while singing it, almost choking up a couple times. But he still delivered hitting the high note and holding it forever - and the fans went wild with applause. David TRULY was MARVELOUS at Molly's & in La Mirada!
We slept in and went for a swim in the heated pool & Jacuzzi before heading back. We hit the Irvine Mall again on the way home for a nice "break" in-between. So this was a very happy & memorable weekend!
