The Partridge Family - Season 2, Episode 22 (47)
Title: The Partridge Papers
First aired: March 3, 1972
Synopsis:
On her way out the front door with Reuben, Laurie tells the family she is heading out for a promotional photo shoot for the school newspaper. Much to her annoyance, she has recently been elected as Miss Dill Pickle and must attend the ceremony. There is to be an auction of celebrity items to raise money and Laurie will be donating her ballet shoes.
Laurie is uncomfortable in the presence of Marvin, the editor of the school newspaper, who is collecting the donated items. She claims that he hates her, but she’s not sure why. Marvin is due to arrive at the Partridge house, however she is about to go out the door, so it is Danny’s job to give Marvin the brown box containing Laurie’s ballet shoes.
Later it is discovered that Danny gave Marvin the tan shoebox containing Laurie’s very private journal, instead of the brown shoebox containing the ballet shoes. She is sick with worry and embarrassment at the thought of Marvin possibly reading her journal and publishing her private journal entries in the school newspaper.
She has a plan. She will ask Keith and Danny to secretly sneak in to Marvin’s school newspaper office and swap the tan box for the brown box. Keith, Danny and Laurie can’t agree to who will or won’t do the task. Eventually after much bribery and disagreement, Laurie claims she will do it herself! Keith and Danny feel sorry for her, so they agree to swap the box. They feel reluctant however, as they know it is breaking and entering, so they choose to call it ‘temporary trespass’. After a lot of goofy mistakes and careless errors, all three eventually succeed in entering the building.
Meanwhile, back at the house, Marvin turns up and Shirley has a deeper discussion with him regarding his attitude to Laurie. He admits he likes Laurie a lot, but feels inadequate and dull and the only way Laurie might notice him is to keep the diary.
Shirley convinces Marvin that she will notice him in a much nicer way if he returns the diary, so they leave the house together to retrieve it. There, they come across the ‘trespassing’ trio. Shirley encourages apologies from the trio for the break in, but firstly, an explanation from Marvin to Laurie is in order.
With reluctance and humility, Marvin tells Laurie that he actually likes her a lot and would she please go out with him. She appears surprised, yet relieved, then she says with a smile, ‘Can I have my diary back first?’.
The family perform the song, ‘It’s One of Those Nights’, with Marvin in the audience, exchanging smiles with Laurie. All is forgiven and they can now be friends.
Later, at home, Laurie collects the mail and a letter has arrived for Keith. At the same time, curious to know the contents of Laurie’s diary, Keith threatens to read it aloud to the whole family. In exchange, Laurie opens the love letter to Keith and begins reading it aloud. This results in a chase between brother and sister, each still learning the important lessons of respect, privacy and honesty.
